The Fred N. Speiss Hall is a four story building with an assignable area of 10,497 square feet that primarily houses the Marine Physical Laboratory at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The facility was occupied in 1999 and is named in honor of Fred N. Spiess, former director of Scripps and an important figure in the development of the institution. Speiss was a nationally recognized oceanographer whose research interests included the study of long-range sound propagation and underwater communication, plate tectonics and seafloor geodesy.
